FORD SIERRA COSWORTH EX COLIN MCRAE

The Ford Sierra Cosworth project was initiated in 1983 due to the new FIA regulations about the Groups “A” and “N”. Indeed with a limited run of 5000 cars built in one year it was possible to homologated them. However due to the “Group B” RS 200, building was delayed and the new car was shown at Geneva in March 1985. It was very nice and aggressive with wide track and impressive rear wing. The powerful 204 HP engine was matched to a reworked chassis with refined suspension, brakes and differential. It was fast with 240 km/h as top speed and only required 27sec from start to reach one km. After the 5000 cars building was completed in summer 1986, it was homologated in December. Ford Motorsport allocated some cars to different teams which the best known was Boreham who campained them in WRC. The Group A car never had the expected success as the fabulous 4WD Lancia benefitted from a massive investment, Cesare Fiorio’s cars were very much advanced technologically and won all the championships from 1987 to 1991. However the Group A Sierra is most likely the quickest 2WD rally car ever built. In the mean time factory Group N cars were built, most of them for national championships, during 1987 / 1989 period they were top performers which won many rallies and championships.

This outstanding Sierra Cosworth “D936 UOO” was a Ford Motorsport factory car built by “Red Motorsport” the famous UK Geoff Fielding’s company now ran by Neil Gatt, first registered in 1987 at Ford Motorsport’s own name. It was raced in 1989 by Colin McRae, being the very first Ford driven in race with the late 1995 WRC Championship winner. During the Welsh Rally that season, faithful to its “McCrash” nick name, Colin had to retired following and accident. The car was stored and rebuilt by Red Motorsport but retired from racing, indeed since 1990 the Sierra 3 doors were no more competitive GRN cars. In 1991 Red Motorsport acquired the rebuilt “D936 UOO” to be sparely used by team owner Geoff Fielding in local rallies. In April 1992 the car was purchased by Didier Auriol’s brother in law to be raced in the French championship. Auriol’s had close connexion with Red Motorsport has they built and maintained for him the famous Metro and Sierra “33 Export” he won the 1986/87/88 French Championships with. The car raced in 1992 the French Championship but despite victories failed to win the group N title. Since then the car was retired from racing and carefully kept by Auriol’s brother in law until current owner bought the car. It was recently repainted into its original Colin McRae’s livery from 1989 and benefitted from an extensive mechanical overall to be race ready. This is a fabulously original car which was only sparely used since its Ford Motorsport’s days and was kept in original Group N specification. It’s still and very quick 300 HP rally car with excellent handling and is very easy to drive. The finest specialists will recognize all of the factory specifications, notably the most visible : the famous fuel filler. It’s still registered with UK V5 under factory Colin’s registration number “D936 UOO” as it was not re-registered in France. The Sierra also comes with an interesting history file including paperwork from Red Motorsport, period pictures from the purchase in UK at Red as long as many info from the 1992 racing season in France. This is an excellent condition factory car, with Ford Motorsport’s V5 and registration, ready to join any major Rally Cars collection.
