JAGUAR XK 150 "S"
The fabulous Jaguar XK line appeared in 1948 at London’s Earl Court show with the XK120. The first XK was actually in the idea of Jaguar’s founder, Sir Williams Lyon, a quickly designed car, built due to lack of time to fill in the gap between the SS100 and a future Jaguar sport car. Because steel was difficult to obtain the body was made of aluminium ( due large aircraft recycling of aircrafts ) and the body frame was in wood. However, largely surprising his conceptor the car had an enormous success and orders followed quickly. Indeed the body design by Malcom Sawyer was pure and beautiful, the all new 3.4 liter XK with DOHC producing 160 HP was enough no allow 190km/h of top speed. The car was offered at almost the half price of its competitor and became extremely popular in the US. Then Jaguar’s identity was born : a nice, quick and affordable sport car. The XK range was declined in Roadster ( OTS ), Coupe ( FHC ) and Convertible ( DHC ) In the same time the make went to endurance races and won 5 times Le Mans 24 Hours in the 50s with XKCs and XKDs. The experience acquired at tracks was closely transferred to the road production and slowly XK120s, XK140s and XK150s became the best “Grand Tourisme” cars of their times. The XK 150 launched in 1957, was a natural evolution of the XK140, the 150 was more powerful had better brakes & chassis, steering by rack and pinion and a much easy daily driver. Jaguar always offered to their requiring customers upgraded engines derived from the race cars, the XK120 and 140 could have the “C” type head but with the 150 it was possible to have a very special car. In 1958 moreover the basic version it was possible to obtain a “S” which benefited from a powerful 3.4 liter/3 carbs/250 HP engine, it was only available in Coupe and Roadster, there were some modifications to the interior, the wheels were wire, a “S” emblem appeared on the doors and various other fittings. It was recently ask for a report to Norman Davis, the legendary Jaguar test driver and Le Mans racer, what was his favourite sport car? He simply replied : : “The XK 150S was a marvellous car. Very smooth, lots of power, and a refined ride. I really enjoyed that car.”
